This article provides an account for word order phenomena in Amazigh. Following previous literature, vie argue that the basic word order of the language is VSO. The SVO structures that surface are argued to be a consequence of the interaction between syntactic constraints and discoursal ones. Thus, due to discoursal considerations taking precedence over purely syntactic ones in Amazigh, SVO and VSO are both naturally-occurring structures in this system.
