"Critical, rare, uncommon, neglected, exotic, strategic" are a few of the many terms that are used to describe languages as diverse as Amharic, Chinese, and Zulu. The author prefers the value-free and descriptive term "less commonly taught languages" (or LCTLs), in which he includes all human languages with the exception of English, French, German, and Spanish.
