This dataset accompanies the study “Does Financial Development Affect Economic Growth Asymmetrically in Algeria? Evidence from a PCA-Based NARDL Model.” It contains annual observations for Algeria covering the period 1980–2020. The dataset includes economic growth (EG), general government final consumption expenditure (GOV), trade openness (TO), liquid liabilities to GDP (M2/GDP), domestic credit to the private sector as a percentage of GDP (CD), and bank deposits to GDP (BANK). These variables are drawn from World Bank databases and are used to construct a composite financial development index through principal component analysis (PCA). The workbook also includes the constructed financial development index (FD), which is based on the first principal component derived from the three financial indicators M2/GDP, private-sector credit, and bank deposits. The PCA-based index is subsequently used in the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) analysis to examine whether positive and negative changes in financial development are associated differently with economic growth in Algeria. The deposited data are intended to support transparency, reproducibility, and independent verification of the empirical analysis presented in the associated manuscript. They can be used to reproduce the construction of the PCA-based financial development measure and the main econometric analyses reported in the study.
