This article offers a clear, practical look at how generative AI (GenAI) can fit into the Design Thinking process to boost creativity and problem-solving, especially in education. Drawing from a real workshop at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana, the authors show how these tools can support but not replace human insight and empathy. Design Thinking is a flexible, user-focused approach to tackling tough problems. It revolves around five key stages: Empathise (getting to know users' real needs), Define (sharpening the problem statement), Ideate (brainstorming lots of ideas), Prototype (building quick, rough versions), and Test (trying things out and refining them based on feedback). It's iterative, meaning you loop back as needed, always keeping people at the center. The piece starts with the KNUST workshop, where students used GenAI to address low engagement in online learning.
