Artificial intelligence (AI) in psychology: a commentary on AI’s emerging role and the ensuing conversation.

This commentary examines the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence in psychology in South Africa. Artificial intelligence can transform teaching, research, and professional practice, but also poses risks. While generative tools can produce academic writing, they cannot replace human reasoning and critical thinking. Artificial intelligence can also support teaching and psychological interventions, and enhance research by identifying overlooked patterns. However, its use raises ethical concerns, including authorship, bias, and errors. The commentary concludes that as artificial intelligence evolves, risks in academic writing must be addressed and students must develop strong research skills.
