Artificial Intelligence and Global Trends in Academic Libraries: Lessons and Implications for South African Universities

This study explored global trends in artificial intelligence use in public academic libraries, examined tools adopted by South African university libraries, and offered best-practice recommendations for improved implementation. This study employed a narrative literature review methodology, incorporating a contextual analysis of AI adoption in South African public academic libraries. Data were gathered through the analysis of university websites, university documents, and published literature. A comparative approach was used to evaluate global trends alongside local practices, enabling the identification of similarities and differences between global and South African contexts. The study developed recommendations tailored to South African public academic libraries, informed by best practices and the contextual specific needs. Globally, academic libraries are adopting AI tools to enhance services and improve user experience. In developed countries, AI adoption has since been witnessed in libraries to enhance resource discovery, streamline library technical operations, and provide reference service. Commended for their speed, accuracy, personalisation and 24/7 availability, AI technologies have transformed library practices. In the South African context, adoption is still in its early stages. Public academic libraries have adopted AI tools to varying extents, with all exploiting the benefits of discovery tools. A few are leveraging AI-driven reference services. Drawn from international best practices, the study recommends that public academic libraries in South Africa develop user-centric AI solutions, invest in AI infrastructure, foster a culture of collaboration with institutions, consider inclusion of local languages in AI Tools, invest in staff training to bridge skill gaps, and develop AI policies.
