Abstract Background Heart and blood vessel disorders collectively are known as cardiovascular diseases, or CVDs. It is a serious global health issue, with low- and middle-income nations accounting for 82% of cardiovascular deaths. Because CVD risk factors are not effectively managed or prevented, these diseases disproportionately affect younger populations and cause premature mortality in developing nations like Ethiopia. The purpose of this study was to select suitable models and evaluate the factors influencing the survival of cardiovascular patients. Methods During a follow-up period, patients participated in this study. The study, which comprised patients taken from EDHS, Using EDHS data, a sizeable sample of 4712 patients was obtained for this investigation. R software was used to analyze survival data using semi-parametric survival models. Results Of the 4712 patients, 1760 (37.4%) were still alive at the end of the study period, and 2952 (62.6%) had passed away due to events or deaths. Cardiovascular disorders were very common. Patients with inappropriate use of risk factors such as alcohol and smoking have been found to have a higher prevalence of cardiovascular diseases. Conclusions This study found a significant correlation between cardiovascular diseases and blood pressure, smoking, being illiterate, and having diabetes. In order to inform policy and direct strategies and programmers for the prevention and control of these risk factors for the survival of cardiovascular patients, the health organization should be established in Ethiopia on a sentinel basis.
