A cross-sectional study of the association between asthma control (measured with Asthma Control Test, GINA asthma control questionnaires and lung function- PEF & FEV1) and house-hold levels of PM2.5 (measured with PurpleAir PM2.5 sensors) and carbon-monoxide (measured with Lascar CO loggers) and exposure to second-hand smoking (measured with urinary cotinine) among children with asthma on routine outpatient clinic follow-up at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja. The study primarily aims to ascertain the association between asthma control and household air pollution and second-hand smoking among children with asthma who have been on controller medications for at least 2 months, controlling for potential confounder such as medication adherence, inhaler technique, socioeconomic status and BMI. Secondarily, the correlation between questionnaire-assessed house-hold air pollution exposure (house-hold fuel types) and objectively measured PM2.5 and CO will be explored, as well as the correlation between questionnaire-assessed second-hand smoking exposure and urine cotinine. These data may be valuable for patient counselling on choice of household fuels and control of household air pollutions and for advocacy of control of air pollution and second-hand smoking.
