Awareness of research data management practices in selected Ghanaian public libraries

Purpose This study aims to examine Research Data Management (RDM) awareness, practices and implementation challenges among librarians in selected Ghanaian public libraries, namely Accra Central Library, Ashanti Regional Library and Northern Regional Library. Design/methodology/approach A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was adopted using quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A total of 111 librarians participated in the survey, while 12 respondents were purposively selected for interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, whereas qualitative data were analyzed thematically. Convenience and purposive sampling techniques were used. Findings The findings revealed that most librarians possessed moderate awareness of RDM concepts, with 67% indicating familiarity with data management principles. However, implementation of RDM practices remained limited due to inadequate infrastructure, absence of institutional RDM policies, limited technical expertise and inadequate funding. Although libraries provided basic data storage and digitization services, robust RDM frameworks and repository systems were largely lacking. Many librarians perceived RDM as more applicable to academic libraries than public libraries. Despite these challenges, participants expressed willingness to adopt RDM services if provided with adequate training, institutional support and infrastructure. Originality/value The study highlights the potential of Ghanaian public libraries to contribute significantly to national research data management initiatives and provides evidence relevant to strengthening RDM systems in developing countries.
