Title: Assessing the New Primary School Curriculum Implementation in the Amhara Region A Study of Fidelity, Challenges, and Opportunities§ This study, "Assessing the New Primary School Curriculum Implementation in the Amhara Region: A Study of Fidelity, Challenges, and Opportunities," is the result of a thorough formative assessment carried out in 2025/2026 by the Amhara National Regional State Education Bureau (ANRSEB). The purpose of the study is to assess the viability, efficacy, efficiency, and relevance of implementing the new curriculum in classrooms throughout the region.Research Methods and ScopeThe study used a contemporaneous mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative depth from focus group discussions (FGDs) and interviews with quantitative data from surveys and classroom observations. The study identifies a significant "rhetoric-reality gap" between planned educational policies and how they are actually implemented in classrooms. Important areas examined include:
ð Resource Deficits: According to the report, there is a severe lack of basic resources, such as teacher manuals, syllabi, and textbooks (with ratios as high as 1:10 in some remote areas).
