Barriers to Addiction-Related Care During Pregnancy in Nigeria: A Scoping Review and Health-Systems Policy Analysis

This study is a scoping review and health-systems policy analysis examining barriers to addiction-related care during pregnancy in Nigeria. The review will synthesise empirical studies on substance use among pregnant and postpartum women alongside national policy, legal, and strategic documents to identify structural, clinical, and regulatory factors shaping access to care. A structured literature search will be conducted across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, African Journals Online (AJOL), CINAHL, and Global Index Medicus, covering January 2000 to April 2026. Grey literature will be identified through targeted searches of WHO IRIS, Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health publications, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and related sources. Reference lists of included studies will also be screened. Data will be extracted using a structured template and synthesised thematically using the World Health Organization health-systems building-blocks framework. Findings will be triangulated with international clinical guidelines to assess alignment between Nigerian policies and global standards of perinatal substance-use care.
