This study examines bioclimatic strategies for improving energy efficiency in hotels in Abuja, Nigeria, with attention to the environmental requirements of five-star hospitality. Although previous studies have established the benefits of individual passive strategies in Nigerian buildings, limited attention has been given to their integrated application within five-star hotel buildings in Abuja. A qualitative multiple-case study approach was adopted to examine Transcorp Hilton Abuja, Abuja Continental Hotel, and Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, Dubai, using field observations, semi-structured interviews, photographic documentation and structured assessment checklists. Data were analysed thematically. Findings indicate that building orientation, external shading, thermal mass, atrium ventilation, landscaping and operable openings influence cooling requirements. Transcorp Hilton Abuja exhibited comparatively stronger passive characteristics through its north–south orientation, atrium configuration and shading systems, although significant energy demand remained because of limited guest-room ventilation and roof exposure. Abuja Continental demonstrated the constraints associated with improving an established hotel, while Burj Al Arab illustrated the energy implications of highly expressive forms and extensive mechanical environmental control. Based on the findings, an integrated framework incorporating climate-responsive orientation, thermal-mass envelopes, strategic vegetation, controlled ventilation, earth-air heat exchange and mixed-mode systems is proposed. The study provides practical guidance for architects, developers and policymakers seeking to improve energy efficiency and thermal comfort in tropical hospitality buildings.
