Biotechnology and smallholder agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa.

Abstract This chapter examines the declining agricultural productivity, the problems of smallholder farming, and the challenge of feeding the poor in Africa, and explores the role of biotechnology in addressing these issues. It is concluded that although biotechnology can improve the lives of poor rural farmers in Africa, one needs to think beyond just selling seeds. Structural and policy constraints of smallholder farmers and their rights to indigenous seeds and genetic material have to be addressed.
