Can a Film Improve Student Engagement, Aspirations, and Academic Performance? A School-Delivered Queen of Katwe Screening in Kenya — Pilot and Feasibility Study

This project contains the analysis plan, de-identified data, analysis code, and outputs for a single-arm, pre/post, mixed-methods pilot and feasibility study of a school-delivered group screening of the film Queen of Katwe (registered at ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT07072741). Building on a randomized trial in Uganda in which a cinema screening of the film improved examination performance (Riley, 2024), we tested whether a low-resource public secondary school in Nyeri County, Kenya could deliver the film itself. Seventy-two students (Forms 2–4) completed measures of school engagement and aspiration orientation before and after the screening, rated its acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility (AIM/IAM/FIM), and contributed school examination grades across the school term; three student focus groups and two teacher interviews were analyzed thematically. The repository includes the statistical analysis plan, de-identified analysis datasets with a codebook, the complete R pipeline reproducing all results, and output tables and figures.
