This case study documents the journey of Monicah Muthoni, a Deaf educator in Kenya, illustrating how individual resilience can both overcome and expose systemic barriers in inclusive education. Pursuing training in Early Childhood Development and Education and as a Learner Support Assistant, Monicah navigated a system largely without sign language interpreters or accessible instruction, relying on self-study and peer support to succeed. Through volunteering (ICS|VSO; Deaf Child Worldwide) and roles in eKitabu's Digital StoryTime and Scaling Inclusive Early Learning with Deaf Children projects, she built expertise in teaching Deaf learners and those with multiple disabilities, integrating accessible digital content and differentiated, multi-sensory methods. She has become a peer trainer, role model, and advocate, co-creating the award-winning Sign Literacy Bridge initiative and advancing to a Language Advisor role at Deaf Opportunities OutReach. Her story underscores the case for investing in Deaf educators and embedding accessibility from the earliest stages of teacher training.
