At the center of this item is an audio recording (wav file) in Shilluk of a narrative by Yoanis Yomon Kir, who tells about a chief of 70 years ago, whose excellent reputation long out-lived him: Chieg Amaylek of Adodo. The audio recording is 4 minutes and 10 seconds long (249 seconds), and it is accompanied by a detailed time-aligned annotation, which includes the Shilluk orthography; English translation; phonological transcription; morpheme glosses; and comments. The metadata are included in spreadsheet format, and questionnaire and permission documents as image files. Chief Amaylek of Adodo Kwakway ruled Adodo in early 1950s, long South Sudan's independence from Sudan. And that time, people were paying poll tax; every man has to pay. Taxes were paid every year, and if a person failed to pay, he will be taken to prison. Chief Amaylek loved his people and did not allow them to be taken to prison. The Commissioner comes to his chiefdom with people to be taken to prison, he talks to each person separately and tells him that if he is taken, his family will suffer. The person agrees and tells him that he will pay double in the coming year. The Commissioner agreed and his subjects are released. He was having good relations with the King in Pachodo: if there was anything to be done, his Chiefdom is always the first. He cared for his people at times of hunger. He was loved by his people; they plant, weed, and bring his crops home. And in turn, he allowed youth to rejoice with drum dance, after weeding the Chief's farm. This item consists of a recorded Shilluk narrative (wav file), accompanied with annotation (in Praat TextGrid) and associated information: metadata, permissions and speaker questionnaire. The associated information is also summarized, in a spreadsheet. The TextGrid annotation includes Shilluk orthography, translation, and comments.
