Communality Based Coping Mechanism for Gender Based Violence Survivors in Selected Resettled Communities of Borno State

Gender-based violence denotes any act of abuse or threat otherwise inflicted against a person or group because of their factual or perceived sex, gender, sexual orientation, and/or gender identity (WHO 2001). In this study, Gender based violence refers to the experiences of a person or group which has major detrimental social, physical, and emotional consequences. The insurgency in Borno State has led to widespread gender-based violence with severe psychological trauma on survivors. This present study intends to identify community-based coping mechanisms employed by gender-based violence survivors. However, to achieve this objective, the study used a survey methods using quantitative data while simple percentage was used to analyze the data obtained from the questionnaire. However, based on the findings, this study revealed that the community-based coping mechanisms (CBCM) in Borno State are likely being employed in a context of Multi-faceted Trauma, primarily psychological and physical, Economic Stress which is also a key driver and consequence of GBV is also employed. Finally, based on this finding, the study recommends among other recommendations the integration of traditional and formal systems (Bridge the Gap: Train religious leaders (77.5% effective) and family supporters (81.8% effective) in basic trauma-informed care and referral pathways.
