Community Participation in Wildfire Management in the Atebubu-Amantin District, Ghana

This study examines community participation in wildfire management in the Atebubu-Amantin District of Ghana. It examines local strategies, the role of indigenous knowledge, and factors that limit effective engagement. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and field observations across three communities. Results show that communities actively prevent and control wildfires using traditional burning techniques, early warning systems, and local networks. Challenges include limited access to equipment, insufficient training, and low institutional support. Government-led systems often overlook local contributions, which can lead to reduced community motivation and effectiveness. The study demonstrates that integrating local knowledge with formal wildfire management systems enhances prevention, response, and resilience. Strengthening community involvement, providing regular training, and fostering collaboration among communities, government agencies, and NGOs can improve wildfire management outcomes.
