International audience Many authors highlight important imperatives in relation to the « deliberate andconscious marking of identity » in the emergence of mixed languages. From thisperspective, and in the particular case of Scamto (a South African Townshipmixed code), this article focuses on the question of lexical manipulationconsidered as a conscious process of lexical creation through which its creatorsand speakers express their new identity.
