The map was constructed using data from the national land cover database (Fairbanks et al., 2000). Degraded vegetation (4.6% of South Africa) comprises the following sub-categories: - Degraded: forest and woodland (0.8%, concentrated in Limpopo province) - Degraded: herbland (0.0%, traces in KwaZulu-Natal) - Degraded: shrubland and low Fynbos (0.5%, concentrated in the Western Cape) - Degraded: thicket & bushland (1.9%, concentrated in North West Province) - Degraded: unimproved grassland (1.5%, concentrated in Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal)."
