This chapter examines sign language literacy as a fundamental linguistic, cultural, and educational competency for Deaf individuals. It traces historical developments in Deaf Education, confronts persistent myths, and unpacks the realities of sign language practice in contemporary educational contexts. Drawing on human rights and disability rights frameworks, including the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the chapter contends that sign language literacy is indispensable for communication access, identity formation, cognitive development, and meaningful social participation. With reference to Zambia and the broader African context, it highlights key barriers, among them negative societal attitudes, inadequate teacher training, weak policy implementation, and deeply inaccessible resources. The chapter concludes by affirming that inclusive societies must recognise sign languages as legitimate languages and prioritise fully equitable communication access across all national education systems worldwide.
