ABSTRACT
The potential threat of heavy metals from solid wastes dumpsites in urban cities to our
environment and human heath has led to many studies to fine out the level of its risk to human
health. In this study, determination of heavy metals content in soil fromsolid waste dumpsites in
Kaduna metropolis of Kaduna state, Nigeria was carried out using Contamination Factor
index.Soilsamples were collected from three selected dumpsites in Kaduna metropolis
respectively. Control samples were obtained at about 200m away from the dumpsites, using
standard sampling methods. Soil extracts was analyzed using, Atomic Absorption
Spectrophotometric (AAS) method and subjected to statistical analysis. The results showed that;
Heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Cr, Ni, Cd and Pb) mean- concentration (mg/kg) from the solid
waste dumpsites were; 2,387.7, 1,123.0, 362.0, 956.1, 161.8, 44.9, 16.0 & 242.4 respectively.
While, the concentrations obtained from the control site for; Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Cr, Ni, Cd &Pb
were; 5,167.8, 520.0, 80.1, 267. 0, 105.3, 12.8, BDL & 107.4 respectively. The trend of heavy
metals contamination status from the solid waste dumpsites, were; Cu>Ni>Pb> Zn >Mn> Cr>
Fe, ANOVA at P> 0.05 showed that, there was no significant difference in the concentrations of
Zn, Mn, Cr, Ni& Cd, while, the concentrations of Fe, u&Pb_ were significantly different. The
concentration of metals in the soil from the dumpsites were above the world soil average and......
