The absence of a comprehensive understanding of the specific implementation challenges and opportunities hinders micro-lenders' successful adoption of digital transformation strategies in Namibia, impeding their ability to enhance operational efficiency, expand their customer base, and effectively compete in the digital financial services landscape. Therefore, there is a need to investigate and address the implementation barriers and identify the critical opportunities for digital transformation in microlending institutions in Namibia, ultimately supporting their efforts to embrace digital technologies and leverage their potential benefits. The objective of this study is to develop an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven prototype aimed at automating and enhancing Know Your Customer (KYC) processes for microlenders operating in Namibia. Recognising the persistent challenges faced by microlenders—especially within resource-constrained environments, the research adopts an exploratory sequential mixed-methods approach, integrating both qualitative insights and quantitative evidence. It systematically investigates operational barriers, assesses the feasibility of AI and machine learning integration, and identifies practical pathways for digital transformation tailored to the local microfinance context. The research extends existing frameworks for technology adoption in financial services by incorporating considerations specific to microfinance institutions, such as social impact objectives, limited resources, and serving underbanked populations. The study not only contributes to the emerging literature on digital transformation and financial inclusion but also offers actionable recommendations for microlenders, technology providers, and policymakers seeking to responsibly implement AI in customer onboarding and compliance frameworks.
