This repository contains open materials and open data associated with the study Digital Campaigning in Electoral Authoritarian Contexts: Functional Theory and Emotional Appeals in Uganda’s 2021 Elections. The project examines how Ugandan presidential candidates Yoweri Museveni and Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) used Facebook during the 2021 election campaign, applying the Functional Theory of Political Campaign Discourse and an emotional appeals framework.
Because Meta’s terms of service prohibit sharing raw Facebook data, the repository provides:
Open Materials: full coding procedure (with definitions and rules), the numeric codebook, intercoder reliability notes, a visual coding flowchart, and repository documentation. These materials ensure transparency and allow replication of the coding process.
Open Data: a structured template dataset (template_dataset.csv) showing how posts were coded, with example rows. This template allows researchers to apply the coding scheme to their own data.
Together, these materials make the coding scheme and analytic process reproducible while respecting platform restrictions.
