This study investigated the presence and functions of discourse markers in the Izọn language, a Niger-Congo language spoken across six states in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Drawing on both spoken and written data from native speakers, textbooks and dictionaries, the research identified a wide range of discourse markers in Izọn, categorizing them according to contrast, addition, result, time and other functions. The study employed a descriptive methodology, with analysis grounded in coherence theory and relevance theory, to examine how these markers contribute to textual cohesion, guide interpretation, and manage the flow of discourse. Findings revealed that Izọn discourse markers serve as critical tools for linking ideas, signaling relationships between sentences, expressing speakers’ attitudes and enhancing clarity in communication. The study underscores the universality of discourse markers across languages and highlights their indispensable role in ensuring coherence, fluency, and effective communication in both spoken and written Izọn discourse.
