Dynamics of seasonal labour demand peaks in legume-based cropping systems across sub-Saharan Africa: a mini review

Smallholder farmers dominate agricultural production in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where labour remains the principal input shaping cropping system choices, productivity and technology adoption. Legume crops play a central role in sustainable intensification through their contributions to soil fertility, household nutrition, and income diversification yet their adoption and sustained integration remain limited for smallholder systems. Multiple factors constrain adoption, including land shortage, market access, knowledge gaps, and institutional bottlenecks. However, growing evidence indicates that labour constraints (particularly seasonal labour demand peaks), interacting with these factors, constitute a critical and under-recognised bottleneck to legume scaling. Here we synthesise evidence on seasonal labour demand dynamics in smallholder legume-based cropping systems across SSA. Across diverse agroecological and socio-economic contexts, three recurrent labour-demand peaks are consistently observed: (1) crop establishment, (2) crop protection (weed and pest control), and (3) harvesting. Labour requirements are strongly mediated by farm power availability and tillage practice, with animal-draught and motorised systems consistently achieving higher labour productivity than manual systems. Legumes (particularly groundnut, soybean, and common bean) consistently require more labour per hectare than maize. Gendered labour burdens are also pronounced, with women disproportionately responsible for labour-intensive operations. We consider that seasonal labour demand peaks represent a critical but under-recognised constraint to legume-based sustainable intensification and scaling across SSA. Addressing this challenge will require appropriate-scale mechanisation that is tailored to farm size and resource capacity, targeted labour-saving interventions and gender-responsive innovation pathways.
