This sociolinguistic study examines the use of English in the Algerian context through a survey of 325 participants, predominantly young and educated. The findings reveal, on one hand, a widespread adoption of English, particularly in digital, professional, and academic contexts. Over 30% of Algerian Arabic utterances contain anglicisms, reflecting the pervasive diffusion of English in informal settings. On the other hand, an analysis of attitudes toward English highlights that motivations underlying the use of anglicisms oscillate between functional necessity and identity-related considerations. The examination of language practices also underscores how English usage reflects both the influence of media and globalization and users’ intent to mitigate linguistic taboos in Algerian society. In summary, while questioning anglicisms and their potential integration into the lexicon, this article addresses the ongoing evolution of Algerian Arabic, shaped by intrinsic dynamics and external influences mirroring Algerian societal transformations.
