This policy brief highlights a recent study on early learning in Ghana using a cumulative risk and protective framework. The study explores how family experiences and supportive classroom environments together influence children’s early academic skills. Findings show that high-quality teacher–child interactions in the classroom foster growth in both literacy and numeracy for all students, demonstrating the powerful role that schools can play in promoting learning. While some children may encounter challenges at home that affect their early skills, strong, nurturing classroom environments help children build on their strengths and make meaningful academic progress. These insights reinforce longstanding research on the importance of leveraging both home and school environments to promote equitable early learning opportunities and provide direction for policies that support children’s success across settings.
