The growing scale of negative externalities associated with growth and development models fueled by the much-celebrated combustion engine inherited from the industrial revolution have led to the rise of sustainable development goals (SDGs) as prospective successors of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In addition to articulating the potential benefits of the emerging SDGs for environmental sustainability and macroeconomic stability, this paper analyses the implications of this new framework for sustainable development and trade diversification in Africa.
