Emerging Stressors and Adolescent Depression and Anxiety in Kenya

This repository contains the analysis plan, code, and materials for a study of emerging stressors and adolescent mental health in Kenya. Drawing on two cross-sectional school-based surveys conducted in May–June 2023 (combined N = 5,592 adolescents; 74 secondary schools across Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, and Makueni counties), the study examines whether emerging stressors — problematic social-media use and online appearance comparison (digital domain), and climate-change anxiety, pandemic-related stress, and exposure to ethnic-political violence (global domain) — are associated with depression (PHQ-8) and anxiety (GAD-7) symptoms, and whether risk accumulates as stressors co-occur. Contents: (1) statistical analysis plan with confirmatory (H1–H2) and exploratory (H3–H4) hypotheses; (2) R code for all analyses (psychometrics, measurement invariance, mixed-effects models, cumulative-burden dose-response, SEM mediation, sensitivity analyses); (3) survey codebooks; (4) supplementary tables. Data were collected with ethical approval from the Kenyatta University Ethics Review Committee and a NACOSTI research permit; all data are de-identified.
