The public sector in South Africa continues to face challenges with employee wellness due to low morale, fatigue, and a lack of confidence in leadership. Through the lens of Ubuntu, this chapter investigates how compassionate leadership might enhance employee welfare at work. Despite evidence of their beneficial effects on trust, engagement, and resilience, a bibliometric study of 44 academic articles, policy documents, and organisational reports shows that empathy and Ubuntu are not consistently integrated into leadership frameworks. The findings indicate that organisational culture, policy, and training should all incorporate empathetic leadership. This chapter concludes that leadership influenced by Ubuntu provides a long-term method to improve public sector performance and staff wellbeing.
