Environmental Consequences of Informal Sector Activities in Relation to Land Use Regulations in the South East, Nigeria

This study investigates the environmental consequences of informal sector activities in the south east region with particular reference to Enugu Metropolis, Nigeria. The informal sector, plays a vital role in the local economy but contributes significantly to environmental degradation. The research assesses the consequences of informal sector activities, in relation to land use regulations in high density areas of Enugu, among which includes; Abakpa, Obiagu Road, and Ogbete. The study employs mainly primary data and secondary date from internet search engine. Personal observation, key informant interview and FGD were the primary sources utilized. Simple random sampling was adopted in the study. Qualitative data were used for the analyses. The study revealed some of the consequences of informal sector activities on the environment which include waste accumulation and improper disposal, pollution, water contamination, traffic congestion and road obstruction among others. Findings revealed that the informal sector activities were not regulated, and land use regulations were selectively implemented. Therefore, the study suggest that the informal sector activities should be regulated. Basic facilities such as sanitary facilities should be provided, and there should be strict implementation of land use regulations for sustainable environmental development.
