This analysis suggests that 7.3-million of the 130-million global female migrant population is potentially impacted by FGM/C, with more than half of them originating from just four countries of origin: Egypt, Indonesia, Somalia, and Sudan. This analysis shows that the country-of-residence of impacted migrant population skews heavily towards Africa, the Middle East and Asia, where FGM/C is already known to be practised by indigenous populations. Migration patterns within and between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia suggest that the potential for onward migration must be considered when applying the Extrapolation-of-FGM/C-Countries’-Prevalence-Data method to countries where the practice is almost exclusively found within the migrant population – such as in Europe and the United States. This calls for a more profound analysis of ethnic and ancestral origins than simply considering a migrants’ country of birth, as is often the case, when assessing risk.
