Evaluating Accessibility and Disability Compliance in Postgraduate Hostels: Evidence from Students in South-Western University, Nigeria

Accessibility and disability compliance in postgraduate student housing are essential for promoting safe, independent and inclusive residential environments in higher education institutions. This study assessed accessibility features and disability compliance in selected postgraduate hostels in Southwest Nigeria, with the aim of providing evidence for improved inclusive hostel design. A descriptive survey design was adopted, combining questionnaire administration with physical observation and assessment of hostel facilities against relevant accessibility requirements. Data were obtained from 334 postgraduate hostel residents across selected universities and analysed using frequencies, percentages and Mean Weighted Values (MWV). The findings revealed a diverse postgraduate hostel population, with males constituting 59.3%, Master’s students 60.5%, and 43.1% reporting mobility impairment. The overall assessment of accessibility features produced an MWV of 2.54, below the benchmark of 3.00. Hostel entrances and surrounding walkways recorded the highest rating (2.58), while corridors and doorways suitable for wheelchair access recorded the lowest (2.41). Comparative assessment showed that OAU ranked highest in accessibility with an MWV of 2.79, while UNILAG recorded the lowest at 2.27. Disability compliance was similarly inadequate, with an overall MWV of 2.67. OAU recorded the highest compliance rating (2.78), while UNILAG recorded the lowest (2.57). The study concludes that postgraduate hostels in the selected universities remain below acceptable accessibility and disability-compliance standards. It recommends universal design integration, regular accessibility audits, improved maintenance, provision of barrier-free circulation, accessible sanitary facilities, and stronger enforcement of national accessibility regulations in hostel planning and renovation.
