Evaluating Livelihood Patterns, Fishing Strategies, and Socioeconomic Challenges of Small-Scale Fishers in Gbondapi Community, Sierra Leone

The livelihood and fishing techniques of small-scale fishermen in Gbondapi, Sierra Leone, were examined in this study. Determining fishing tactics, evaluating livelihood circumstances, and identifying socioeconomic obstacles were specific goals. Ninety (90) respondents were surveyed using semi-structured questionnaires and personal observation. The majority of fishermen (82.2%) were between the ages of 31 and 40, and 78.9% were married, showing that they were responsible for their households. Fishermen suggested employing certain boats or fishing days as effort units as adaptive management solutions. Standard 3-5 boats, standard 5-10 boats, hook and line, and cast nets were the fishing techniques used. According to the findings, 74% of small-scale fishermen rely on fishing as their main source of income. Fish stock declines, equipment shortages, and inadequate post-harvest management were major socioeconomic issues. The results indicate that small-scale fishing is a significant activity in coastal Sierra Leone and the primary source of income for the majority of locals. This study serves as a starting point for small-scale fisheries management techniques for livelihood sustainability and offers baseline data for governmental and non-governmental organisations looking to expand livelihood assistance programs in rural areas.
