The Niger Delta, a major crude oil-producing region, has been extensively impacted by petroleum exploration, pipeline failures, illegal refining, and industrial discharge. This study investigates the environmental chemistry consequences and sustainability challenges of crude oil activities in the region. Soil, water, and sediment samples were collected and analyzed using chromatographic, spectroscopic, and physicochemical methods to quantify hydrocarbons, PAHs, and heavy metals, while evaluating ecological risks. Findings reveal elevated concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons, carcinogenic PAHs, and toxic metals exceeding global safety limits. Pollutant pathways indicate significant risks of groundwater contamination, bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms, and long-term exposure to local communities. The study highlights the importance of sustainable oil exploitation practices, effective monitoring, and remediation strategies to mitigate environmental degradation in the Niger Delta.
