Factors Associated with Suicide Ideation and Attempt Among Secondary School Students: The Case of Botswana

Background: Suicide is one of the most overlooked leading causes of death among children and adolescents. It is evident that most studies about suicide ideation and attempt have mostly been conducted in first world countries and less in third world continents and countries. There is a need to investigate suicide ideation and attempt among the secondary school community in Botswana. In this preview, the following were investigated: (i) the prevalence of suicide ideation and attempt among secondary students in Botswana and, (ii) the correlation between associated factors and suicide ideation and attempt.
Methods: Journal articles and additional literature that have documented prevalence and correlation of risk factors, suicidal ideation and attempt have been included in this study. The researcher used a questionnaire and a data set from the Botswana Youth Risk Surveillance Survey I (2011) to analyze and identify patterns between risk factors and suicide ideation and attempt with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). In addition, multinomial regression was used to investigate the correlation between risk factors and suicide ideation and attempt.
Results: The results show that there was a statistical significance (p<0.05) between hunger, drinking problem, bullying victimization, physical fighting, rape, illicit drug use, self-image issues, current alcohol use and suicide attempt. Additionally, there was a statistical significance between the aforementioned risk factors and suicide ideation, in exception of current alcohol use (p=0.311)
Conclusions: Botswana needs to mobilize it’s resources into suicide behavioral intervention centers and programs especially in rural communities, educate communities on issues of mental health among children and, include mental health awareness in school curriculums, in order to alleviate the issues of suicide ideation and attempt among secondary students of Botswana. Lastly, there is a need for a more in-depth research on factors associated with suicide ideation and attempt among secondary school students in Botswana
