This faculty lecture titled “Where Taxonomy Meets Silviculture: Pathways to Sustainable Forestry in Nigeria” presents an integrative perspective on the role of plant taxonomy in advancing sustainable forest management in Nigeria. The work highlights the critical importance of accurate plant identification, classification, and nomenclature as foundational tools for effective silvicultural practices, biodiversity conservation, and forest resource utilization.The lecture draws on field-based observations, taxonomic principles, and existing literature to demonstrate how morphological and, where applicable, molecular approaches can improve species identification and forest management decisions. Case examples, including the development of taxonomic keys and the implications of misidentification in research and conservation, are discussed to emphasize the practical relevance of taxonomy in forestry.Methodologically, the work is based on a synthesis of field experiences, herbarium-based verification practices, taxonomic key development, and a critical review of plant classification systems (artificial, natural, and phylogenetic systems). It also incorporates insights from prior empirical studies, published taxonomic literature, and practical forestry applications within tropical ecosystems, particularly in Nigeria.The lecture further examines the consequences of poor taxonomic knowledge in forestry research and practice, including species misidentification, duplication of research efforts, and incorrect application of plant-based resources. It advocates for stronger integration of taxonomy into forestry education, research, and policy frameworks.No human or animal subjects were involved in this work. Data and examples used are derived from field observations, previously published studies, and standard taxonomic procedures, ensuring compliance with academic and ethical research standards.This work is relevant to researchers, students, and practitioners in forestry, plant taxonomy, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable land management. It contributes to ongoing discussions on how interdisciplinary approaches can enhance sustainable forest development in tropical regions.
