The Shilluk recording at the center of this item is a procedural narrative, the second part of an explanation about the role of goats in Shilluk culture. Part one was about children role in caring for them; part two is the use of their milk and meat. It is about the benefits of goats as seen by the children. The narrator speaks about what he knew when he was a child. Goat’s milk is very important; the milk is given to small children and older people and also to children with chest problems. He tells of what the older people did with a goat when a person died in their village; how they killed a goat and what they did with its meat. This item consists of a recorded Shilluk narrative (wav file), accompanied with annotation (in Praat TextGrid) and associated information: metadata, permissions and speaker questionnaire. The associated information is also summarized, in a spreadsheet. The TextGrid annotation includes Shilluk orthography, translation, and comments.
