Freirean Pedagogy for Equitable Assessment, Decolonial Governance, and Cognitive Wellbeing in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: A Systematic Review

This dataset supports the systematic review article "Freirean Pedagogy for Equitable Assessment, Decolonial Governance, and Cognitive Wellbeing in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: A Systematic Review", which synthesises evidence from fifteen (15) studies examining how Freirean critical pedagogy can inform the redesign of equitable assessment, decolonial governance, and psychologically sustaining pedagogies in AI-mediated higher education. The review covers multiple thematic dimensions including epistemological foundations for critiquing algorithmic neutrality (the "mirror" metaphor, critical technical awakenings, and the banking model of education), redesign of assessment and governance practices (shift from policing to design, Theory of Practice Architectures, and institutional legitimacy spirals), intersectional and decolonial dimensions of algorithmic harm (systematic misrecognition along axes of language, caste, and gender, epistemic justice, and recognition, voice, and power), and psychological consequences of cognitive offloading (cognitive debt, pedagogical care, and the preservation of critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and professional judgment). The included studies span diverse geographic contexts, including Australia, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Albania, Greece, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with methodological approaches ranging from qualitative interviews and focus groups to quantitative surveys, psychometric validation, and theoretical-conceptual synthesis. The dataset includes Figure 1 (PRISMA 2020 Flow Diagram illustrating the study selection process from initial database search to 15 included studies), Supplementary Document 1 (PRISMA 2020 Checklist with 27 items completed for the systematic review), Supplementary Document 2 (Risk of Bias Assessment Criteria detailing the quality appraisal framework adapted for diverse study designs spanning qualitative studies, quantitative cross-sectional surveys, psychometric validation, and theoretical-conceptual studies), Supplementary Document 3 (Full Data Extraction Form containing standardised data from all fifteen included studies including author(s), year, geographic scope, study design, theoretical framework, focus/dimension, key contribution, strengths, limitations, and risk of bias assessment).
