This summary presents research on the violence that links resource extraction, migration control, and border enforcement in the Niger–Algeria borderlands. It is based on 68 interviews conducted in April 2025 at the Tchibarakaten gold site in northern Niger (see the note on method and positionality below). It argues that the formalisation of orpaillage (gold panning) — shaped in part by European migration externalisation policies — dispossesses orpailleurs, pushes them into forced mobility, and leaves them exposed to lethal violence at the border. The report traces this as a sequence — dispossession, forced migration, exposure to death, and return.
