For indigenous language press in Africa struggling to break even, gamification as a technological innovation holds both opportunities and threats. Using a qualitative approach, this article explores the potential of gamification in news production to increase the readership of the Alaroye newspaper through user engagement and loyalty. The socio-cognitive theory framed the study as it explains how individual motivation engenders the adoption of news consumption. The study population are management staff and news reporters from Alaroye newspapers. We also included computer scientists, gamification experts, individuals knowledgeable in game development, instructional design and user interface and user experience designs. Telephonic interviews were used for in-depth engagement with study participants. The findings indicate that the level of awareness of journalists about gamification was poor; after further enlightenment, they conceded that although gamified news could be resource intensive, it could potentially increase the readership of Alaroye newspapers. The results also reveal that gamification could drive reader engagement and retention. The Alaroye newspaper can therefore leverage gamification for cultural propagation and preservation. The major challenges of adopting the innovation are finance, technical expertise and user interface design/user experiences of gamified applications. However, the benefits of adopting innovation far outweigh its challenges.
