Gender, displacement, and feminist policy engagement: A Canada-Nigeria outreach initiative

SSHRC CG awarded 2026: This project shares knowledge on how gender-based violence (GBV) is governed and experienced by displaced, refugee, and immigrant women across Nigeria and Canada, with a focus on the institutional gaps that limit access to safety, justice, and support. It is timely because growing displacement, migration, and fragmented service systems require stronger coordination and accountability among governments, humanitarian actors, and community organizations. Through Exchange Labs and Community Forums in Abuja and Edmonton, the project will bring together policymakers, practitioners, survivor-advisors, community leaders, and researchers to identify governance gaps and co-create practical GBV governance compacts that clarify responsibilities, resources, data-sharing, and accountability. The knowledge will be shared through governance pathways, implementation briefs, an Edmonton Coordination Compass, an open-access digital toolkit, a podcast series, and community exhibitions that centre the experiences and expertise of Black and displaced women. As a result, ministries, municipalities, NGOs, and academic partners will have stronger tools and shared frameworks to build gender-responsive, survivor-centred systems that improve coordination, institutional accountability, and pathways to belonging across Canada–Nigeria migration and refuge contexts.
