This white paper explores the emergence of generative AI (Gen AI) as a transformative technological force and critically examines its implications for the African continent. While Western and Chinese AI ecosystems consolidate power through infrastructure, data, and regulation, Africa stands at a pivotal inflection point—poised to either participate in the global AI revolution or remain a dependent consumer. The paper covers Gen AI’s technical evolution, infrastructure demands, reasoning limitations, and geopolitical dynamics. It also presents a nuanced African perspective: from linguistic challenges and infrastructural gaps to innovation opportunities in agriculture, health, education, and governance. By analyzing models like DeepSeek and offering investment pathways, the paper calls for a sovereignty-driven, Africa-first approach to AI—rooted in indigenous knowledge systems, policy reform, and public-private collaboration.
