This systematic review aims to consolidate current knowledge on the genetic diversity of African common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) germplasm using molecular evidence. Despite the crop’s nutritional, economic, and agronomic importance across Africa, information on its genetic structure remains fragmented across regions and marker systems. The review systematically collects, appraises, and synthesizes data from studies employing molecular markers including SSR, SNPs, among others, to characterize bean germplasm in Africa. It examines how genetic variation is distributed among and within populations, assesses the degree of admixture between Andean and Mesoamerican gene pools, and identifies key determinants of diversity such as geography, breeding history, and trait selection. The expected outcome is a continental overview of common bean genetic diversity and population structure, supported by quantitative summaries and thematic insights. The findings will guide breeding programs, conservation initiatives, and future genomic studies aimed at improving yield stability, pest resistance (notably to bruchids), and climate resilience in African common bean production systems.
