Enter LibertyCoder, an open-source Python toolkit empowering Cameroonian environmental activists, researchers, and communities to reclaim their ecological narrative through data. The Genesis: Why Cameroon Needs Environmental Data Sovereignty In 2021, when a European mining company published an environmental impact assessment claiming "minimal forest degradation" in the East Region, local NGOs had no way to verify the data. Satellite imagery was expensive, GIS software required licenses costing years of local salaries, and the raw data wasn't accessible. This information asymmetry inspired a Yaoundé-based collective of developers and environmental scientists to create LibertyCoder—a tool for what they term "environmental data decolonization."
