This project analyzes greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agrifood systems in Africa over the period 2001–2023 using FAOSTAT data. Agrifood systems, including crop and livestock production, land-use changes, and pre- and post-production activities, account for a significant share of total anthropogenic emissions. ## 1. Project Overview This analysis explores agrifood system greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Africa from 2000 to 2023, using FAOSTAT data. ### Objectives: - Track the trend of total emissions over time - Identify which activities (livestock, crops, etc.) drive emissions - Examine emissions composition by GHG type (CO₂, CH₄, N₂O) - Compare emissions across African countries and sub-regions - The analysis is fully reproducible in Jupyter Notebook and uses Python libraries such as pandas, matplotlib, and Plotly. ## 2. Data Source ### Dataset: *FAOSTAT Agrifood Systems Emissions* ####Variables Included: - area → country name - year → year of observation (1960–2023, filtered to 2001–2023) - item → agricultural activity or source of emissions - element → type of GHG (CO₂, CH₄, N₂O) - value → emissions in CO₂ equivalents (million tonnes) ## 3. Data Cleaning Steps - Reshape to Long Format: Converted wide yearly columns into a single year column and value column. - Drop Irrelevant Years: Removed y2030 and y2050 columns. - Correct Data Types: Ensured year is integer and value is numeric. - Filter Study Period: Focused on 2001–2023. - Missing Values: Retained NaNs to avoid bias; handled automatically during aggregation. - Optional Sorting: Dataset can be sorted by area, item, year for readability; not required for calculations. ## 4.
