A simple visualization on the Railway networks supporting the movement of goods and people across the East Africa
# The Engine of Integration: Visualizing East Africa’s Railway Revolution.
East Africa is currently witnessing one of the most ambitious infrastructure transformations in its history. From the bustling Port of Mombasa to the highlands of Addis Ababa and the plains of Tanzania, a new era of connectivity is being forged. This isn't just about laying steel tracks; it’s about redrawing the economic map of an entire continent.
By shifting from the colonial-era "Iron Snake" to high-speed, standard-gauge technology, the region is effectively slashing transit times, lowering the cost of basic goods, and turning landlocked nations into global trade hubs.
To understand this leap, we have to look at the two distinct worlds of rail currently operating side-by-side:
## 1. The Modern Standard Gauge Railway (SGR)
As seen in the first image, the SGR represents the "Future of Flow." These sleek, high-capacity lines are built on elevated viaducts to bypass traffic and wildlife, moving massive amounts of cargo and passengers at speeds previously unimaginable in the region. It is the high-tech backbone of the Northern and Central Corridors.
## 2. The Legacy Meter Gauge Railway (MGR)
The second image captures our "Legacy Baseline." The MGR has been the region's workhorse for over a century. While it may be slower and weathered, its role is changing rather than disappearing. Today, these lines are being rehabilitated to act as the "Last Mile" connection, feeding goods from major SGR hubs into smaller towns and rural markets.
Through this project, I’ve mapped how these two systems—the historic and the high-tech—work together to drive the East African Community toward a more integrated and prosperous future.
