It’s part of the Ijo/Ijaw language family # Ibani → English Translator (Streamlit) A community-driven translator for **Ibani**, an Ijaw language spoken by the indigenous people of Bonny Island and Opobo in Rivers State, Nigeria. ## ⚠️ Before you start: about the data This project does **not** ship with a real Ibani dictionary. There is no widely available digitized Ibani lexicon to draw from, so `glossary.csv` and `examples.csv` start out as empty placeholder templates. The app is only useful once you (or contributors) fill them in with real words and sentences from native speakers or verified linguistic sources. Treat this as infrastructure for collecting and using that data, not as a finished dictionary. ## Setup 1. Install Python 3.10+. 2. In this folder, create a virtual environment and install dependencies: ```bash python -m venv venv source venv/bin/activate # Windows: venv\Scripts\activate pip install -r requirements.txt ``` 3. (Optional, for AI-assisted translation) Get an API key from console.anthropic.com and either: - paste it into the sidebar when running the app, or - set it as an environment variable before launching: ```bash export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-... # Windows: set ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-... ``` ## Run ```bash streamlit run app.py ``` This opens the app in your browser (usually at `localhost`). ## Usage - **Translate tab** — enter Ibani text and translate it, either via literal dictionary lookup (offline, only knows words you've added) or AI-assisted translation (uses your glossary + examples as context for an LLM). - **Interview Session tab** — run a structured elicitation session with a native speaker: 1. Fill in **Session details** (speaker name/pseudonym, community, …
