## The Crisis
*Galamsey* — from "gather them and sell" — is illegal small-scale gold mining. It has devastated Ghana's rivers, forests and farmlands, polluting water bodies with mercury, arsenic and lead, and threatening the health and livelihoods of millions. Coordinated response requires timely, trustworthy data from the ground. That is what this platform provides.
## Overview
Galamsey Monitor is a full-stack, offline-capable web platform that turns crowd-sourced field reports into actionable environmental intelligence. Citizens report incidents with GPS coordinates and photo evidence; the platform maps them across all 16 regions of Ghana, tracks water quality in affected rivers, and pushes alerts by email and SMS. A Guardian program ranks and rewards verified community reporters, while a public API lets researchers, journalists and NGOs build on the data.
The app is a Progressive Web App: it installs on any phone, captures reports offline, and syncs automatically when connectivity returns — critical for the remote areas where galamsey operates.
